Mechanism

Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic that increases osmotic load in the proximal tubule and descending limb of the Loop of Henle causing water to be retained and then excreted. Mannitol is also used as an oxygen free-radical scavenger and to lower intracranial pressure

12.5g

Indications

Renal impairment, cerebral edema

Action

Osmotic diuretic and oxygen free radical scavenger commonly used on ECC to prevent oxygen free-radical mediated reperfusion injury.

Adverse Effects

Mannitol solutions may crystalize at low temperatures and at higher concentrations

Contraindications

Anuria, intracranial bleeding
