Mechanism

Desmopressin is a synthetic antidiuretic hormone analog that has little vasoconstrictive effect. Instead, it may be used to maintain hemostasis by acting on endothelial cells to stimulate the release of von Willebrand factor (Factor VIII).

Dose

0.3 mcg/kg diluted in 50 mL of saline and given over 15 to 30 minutes

Indications

Diabetes Insipidus, improve coagulation due to a lack of factor VIII, hemophilia A

Site of action

Factor VIII storage sites in the plasma
